the Flaming Lips

Space Ghost passing out lasers...

Police man getting attacked by lasers! we were mean!!!

notice the dancing alien girls on the left and the santa boys on the right.

I havn't even had time to process this show. I have few words...exams, papaers, and deadlines fill my mind right now. The show feels like a dream, 'specially since we got back in the morning. I really love balloons, lasers, energetic alien dancers, and wayne coin. They were all there. It was great. If I had to pick out the 5 best nights of my life, this would definitely be one of them...

if you're ever given the oppertunity to go see the Lips.. please go! You'll be a more fun and interesting person for it... :)

visit Lowen's blog for a more detailed account of the night: http://lawndiaries.covblogs.com/

ok. i'm gald you had fun, but i've never understood how those type of concerts can be enjoyed or understood unless you are...on a lil bit of drugs...please explain.

what do you mean?? how can they not be enjoyed?

grey rose (they/them) said...

actually, i see i was no clear... read carefully i don't understand. wondering what draws YOU. based on my previous (before Christ) life i only attended/enjoyed/soaked up these type shows while under the influence of a substance...i only associate the two...i have never seen one sober, and even when i listen to the lips, i think about old habits. i am only curious how one is drawn to their fun quirkiness in the first place when sober: do you follow m or am i completely misunderstood...since i only enjoyED them and was introduced to these type shows/genres under the influence, that's the ONLY way i think of them...like now, i wouldn't or COULD not listen or attend to certain groups/go to certain shows/dance certain ways without being transported to another time in my life...i am just trying to understand WHAT SPECIFICALLY draws a sober minded person in the first place. <3

i am not saying they CAN'T be enjoyed a all...i am wondering HOW and WHY :)

does ANYone understand what the heck i'm talkin about??!?!??!

basically, the type of things they do, lasers, odd and mismatched characters and costuming, white balloons etc...they trigger "wonderful" images and feelings of one under the influence. those things are designed to enhance. ya hear me?? i simply find it interesting/amusing/puzzling that one finds them SO enjoyable and pleasing.

not trying to confuse you, and there is NOTHING wrong with enjoying it! AT ALL!! i just don't understand it... :)

Lowen said...

No, i don't agree with you that those things are designed to "enhance". Why would anybody need drugs when they're in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory? Lack of imagination is all I can think of. Why do you need to be tripping on acid to appreciate musicians who are enthusiastic and creative?! Incidentally, Wayne Coyne, the lead singer of the band is not a drug user.

You said you associate The Flaming Lips with other bands and shows from your past. I feel like it should be noted here that The Insane Clown Possie and Phish are not in anyway comprable to The Flaming Lips. Quite obviously, those bands are generally shallow, amped up on drugs, and wearing t shirts with Mariquana leaves and "Mean People Suck" slogans.

The Lips simply don't indentify themselves with that sort of culture. Right now, they're working on a theatrical production for Broadway. In the middle of the show we just saw, they played a moving rendition on trumpet of "Taps" (the traditional military memorium piece) to the soldiers who had died in Iraq. Wayne Coyne was recently asked to deliver the graduation commencement speech at his former highschool--and did (which you can view here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=wayne+coyne+highschool)

Finally, I believe that they are some of the best song writers working today. Defending their work almost feels absurd. Think Radiohead. Think Beck. Think classic.

whoa. lowen. did you intend to come across as RUDE?? i am HOPING not.

flaming lips: not bad

i never said they were. i simply am saying that those TYPES of things that they have at their shows remind ME(not you) of other things. i am NOT saying that THEY are users. i never equated the lips to any other band. the atmosphere yes. i do not compare the lips to anyone else. only saying that the pictures that i see here remind ME of other things and was simply interested in an explanation of how YOU ALL who attended enjoyed it. i was expecting something witty and enjoyable and enlightening to read in response. rather, i read something ridiculous and not an answer to my question at all. i happen to appreciate the talent of the lips. I WAS ONLY CURIOUS TO HEAR ABOUT***WHY***YOU ALL APPRCIATE THEM AND THEIR RECENT SHOW SO MUCH. in fact, i think i may have enjoyed the show as well, I'm sure of it, but i'm also sure that i would have been reminded of past days if only briefly.

if you feel you need to "defend their work" to me, you are mistaken.

i never said you NEED drugs to enjoy these things AT ALL> i was just wishing to hear an opinion on someone else's experience since i never have had the pleasure of enjoying one sober. i have been clean/sober for almost 8 years and can only WISH that i had never had those experiences. i can only WISH to attend a beautiful concert and not think of ugly things. i may NEVER be able to NOT recall my past with such visual triggers.

Do you struggle with this at all? i presume not if you misunderstood me so horribly. i hope you thank the lord for not having put holes in YOUR brain with asinine and detrimental things as i have.

I have a delightful and hard-working imagination, as i am sure you and your beautiful sisters do. maybe that's the answer to my question. you enjoyed seeing such imagination!

nobody NEEDS drugs for the flaming lips, willy wonka OR shel silverstein. it is just a mere funny thing that some of their imaginative an awesome talent resembles those created by certain drugs.

by the way, ecstasy and acid are useless unless you HAVE AN IMAGINATION to begin with!!! maybe that's why i loved them so much was because they enhanced MY wild and glorious imagination.

thankfully, now by GOD's RICH GRACE i have an unstoppable and creative mind that works on pure Grace, nothing else.

sienna and kyrie...i pray that y'all haven't misunderstood me as lowen has. please forgive me if i have caused your blood pressure to rise (as mine did after lowen's remarks)

hannah, I understood your question from the start and am excited to answer best i can.

i realize your asking what draws us to shows like that and why they're fun and enjoyable to us since were sober. Your question makes sense....

oh shoot im in class and have to do an assignment now..i'm going to respond to this though... soonsoon.
